Starting in 2024, Burning Man’s new policies require Hushville to become a single, large theme camp. Not to worry-Hushville the theme camp will look and feel very much like Hushville the village.
This change comes because Burning Man is eliminating “Villages” as a category for placement purposes. With a few possible exceptions, every village must either become one large theme camp or split up into several new, independent theme camps. The Hushville Flounders have decided the best choice is to become one large theme camp, since this will allow us to continue to accommodate the same range of campers that we have in the past.
Under this model, theme camps inside of Hushville will become SubCamps. This means that theme camps we’ve had in the past can return to Hushville as SubCamps.
We’ll now require every camper in Hushville to become part of a SubCamp. In order to make the transition simpler and continue to accommodate campers who weren’t a part of an organized themed camp in the past, we’re organizing at least three new SubCamp for 2024:
• Bucket of Birgins-for first time burners
• Servants of the Hat-for BMOrg Department and Art Project volunteers
• Wanderers, Beggars, and Thieves-for campers who were solo in the past
Members of these new SubCamps won’t necessarily have to camp together. They can be dispersed throughout Hushville.
The purpose of these new SubCamps is to coordinate interactivity and events, which are the primary factors in our placement evaluation. Hushville had an amazing year of interactivity in 2023, and we need to bring it back even stronger and more proactively in 2024.
What does this mean for you? Starting this year, everyone camping in Hushville must be part of an existing SubCamp, a new SubCamp (created by yourself and your friends), or one of the three SubCamps created by Hushville. If you have a connection with an existing SubCamp that's accepting new members, it’s a great option. If you would like to set up a new SubCamp in Hushville, contact me to discuss the details. Otherwise we’ll be posting details soon on how the three new SubCamp will operate.
