Placement moving things around?

From Placement:

From Placement Announcements (Registered Theme Camps/Villages)

Placement announcements will be coming to a Camp Lead near you by early July. Before we get there, we wanted to psychologically prepare you for some changes that may be coming your way.

Upon reflection and from listening to external feedback, the Placement Team realized many of our major thoroughfares in Black Rock City have looked quite similar for several years running. By that, we mean camps have been located in more or less the same place. Maybe they’ve been moved a bit this way or that way, but nothing too crazy.

One of the qualities we love about Black Rock City is it’s a temporary city. It is dynamic. It changes. The built environment we co-create is not permanent. Default world city planners we engage with find this to be the most unique and freeing aspect of our city.

This year there are camps who will be making some big moves. They may not be where you’re used to finding them. If you are part of one of those camps, we are communicating this now so you can settle into this possibility, you can communicate this possibility to your campers, and so you know you’re not being singled out. If you’ve historically been located on a major thoroughfare, the chances are higher this will be the case for your camp.

Some folks associate their camp’s identity with their location or their sector. When their location changes, the camp’s fears run wild (we know, we hear all about them when that happens). We’re here to tell you that your camp is much more than your location. Your placement is your context, it’s a jumping off point for what you bring to the city and the interactions you create around you. Placement is about your camp and also about the big picture of Black Rock City. It’s about the neighborhoods, the experience of someone walking or biking down the street, and about the possibilities we create together.

When camps are upset about a new location, we do our best to reassure them and encourage them to give it a try. Nine times out of ten their fears were just that...fears! And we hear on the playa or afterward how much they loved their new neighborhood and new experience. Sometimes we even hear that retrospectively the camp was getting a bit stagnant and needed something new to bring everyone together again. On the flipside, sometimes we keep camps in the same location so they deepen their identity in a specific context.

As a leader, we invite you to think about this and talk to your camp about the possibility of unexpected placement. If this happens, how do you want to communicate this to your camp? How you set the tone as leaders has a lot to do with how this may be received and perceived. Do you want to move kicking and screaming? Or do you want to move into a new adventure? Do you want to lean into change and the unknown within the city you call home? It’s up to you. Placement will be announced by early July.

As the Flounder in charge of our dealings with Placement, I can tell you that we've not been contacted about moving.

They did contact us earlier in the year to get our opinion about splitting the Village up into 2 areas across the street, but after some good discussions, they decided to honor our wishes and keep us as one large area. By that, we can infer that we'll again be on one of the double wide blocks. The 2018 City Plan has not yet been published, but in the 2017 City Plan there were 3 areas of double wide blocks, all between E & G: The large one where we've been the last few years between 5:00 - 7:00, and 2 smaller ones, one between 8:00 - 8:30 and one between 3:30 - 4:00.

IF, and I stress the conditional IF, they keep a similar City Plan for 2018 then we'll almost certainly be in one of those blocks. However, Answergirl who used to run Placement has retired, and the fabulous Trippi Longstocking is now head of Placement so things might change quite a bit. We'l find out in the next few weeks.
